Reviews

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews, there are dozens of movies about growing up a male protagonist - what you could not say when the main character is a woman; especially if the story with "intelligence and sensitivity " was told. This made the movie " rare and welcome ." The portrayal of Ashley Judd brings all aspects of the played character to the fore. It is a shame that they had Judd not nominated for an Oscar.

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun - Times 26 November 1993, the " wonderful ", " stunning " and lively film describing a young woman find true freedom by she knew what she wants to do and was capable of it to do. Ashley Judd give one of the best illustrations of the year ( "one of the very best performances of the year" ). The subtle way in which the relationships of Gissing would be shown, was refreshing.
