Rudolf Lorenzen

Rudolf Lorenzen ( born February 5, 1922 in Lübeck, † November 27, 2013 in Berlin) was a German journalist and writer.

Life and work

Lorenzen grew up in Bremen. He attended grammar school and trained as a ship broker. During the Second World War, he was at work service and soldier. After the war he studied graphics and worked in the advertising industry, including as a copywriter in the Bavarian countryside.

Since 1955, Lorenzen lived in Berlin, where he worked as a journalist for newspapers, periodicals and radio. The journalist and author Anne Marie Weber (1918-1991), whom he later married, encouraged him to literary texts. With one of his first works, the story No more debit and no having under its former title The young Mohwinkel, he won a writing contest in 1957 surprisingly the Süddeutsche Zeitung.

Motivated by the success, Lorenzen operated since then as a writer. He wrote, among other essays, feature articles, reports and satires, but also short stories. Back in 1959, his first novel appeared anything but a hero; for the extensive work he had reworked the material from his award-winning story. The group then 47 invited him to participate in their meetings; Lorenzen, who saw himself as a loner, but refrained. His second novel, The Cutpurse followed in 1962. Alongside he began working on television documentaries, radio plays and feature films.

As from the mid- 1980s, many newsrooms einstellten the publication of narrative prose, Lorenzen also had to do without the further production of stories and feature articles. The short story collection No more debit and no having in which a selection of his short stories is included from the period 1955 to 1980, appeared on his 85th birthday on February 5, 2007, and as a prelude to a comprehensive exhibition at the publishing firm.

About his work, he said: " People make all that before - that's my issue."
