Rudolf Maria Holzapfel

Rudolf Maria Holzapfel ( born April 26, 1874 in Krakow, at that time belonging to Galicia as part of the Habsburg monarchy; † February 8, 1930 in Muri bei Bern ) was an Austrian psychologist and philosopher.

Life

Holzapfel grew up as the son of a physician and free thinker of Jewish descent in Krakow. After his early death, he had to emigrate with relatives in Cape Town. After working as a typesetter in London he traveled to Zurich, where he studied with Richard Avenarius until his death in 1896.

From 1898 to 1901 he wrote in Kherson, South Russia, a first version of its one major work Panideal. Then he continued his studies in Bern, where he received his doctorate from Ludwig Stein (1859-1930) in 1903. In the same year he married the Viennese sculptor Bettina Gomperzes. After traveling in France and Italy, the family lived 1908-1913 in Lower Austria. After the outbreak of the First World War, she moved permanently to Switzerland.
