Rufus King Polk

Rufus King Polk ( born August 23, 1866 in Columbia, Maury County, Tennessee, † March 5, 1902 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania ) was an American politician. Between 1899 and 1902 he represented the State of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Rufus Polk visited the Webb 's Academy in Culleoka. Then he studied until 1887 at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania. Then he took another course in the subject mining. He settled in Danville, where he worked as a chemist. He also held several leading positions in some steel companies. During the Spanish- American War of 1898 he served in a volunteer unit from Pennsylvania. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party. In July 1900 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in part in Kansas City, was nominated on the William Jennings Bryan as their presidential candidate.

In the congressional elections of 1898 Polk was the 17th electoral district of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of the Republican Monroe Henry Kulp on March 4, 1899. After a re-election he could to his death on March 5, 1902 in Congress remain. He was buried in Danville.
