Rui Knopfli

Rui Manuel Correia Knopfli ( born August 10, 1932 in Inhambane, Mozambique, † December 25, 1997 in Lisbon ) was a Mozambican writer and poet.

Life

Rui Knopfli was a descendant of Portuguese immigrants. After studying in South Africa, he worked as a journalist, literary and film critics in Lourenço Marques, today's Maputo. As an opponent of colonialism he wrote for the dissident magazines Tribuna A and A Voz de Moçambique, which called for the independence of Portugal. During this time, his poetic work began. He also translated English authors. After the country's independence in 1975 left Knopfli Mozambique and went to Britain, where he worked from 1975 to 1997 for the Portuguese Embassy. He also published in Portuguese magazines. 1984 his poetic work was awarded the prize of the PEN Club. Rui Knopfli died on Christmas Day in 1997 in Lisbon. 2003 anthology of his poems entitled " Obra poética " was published posthumously.

The lyric Knopflis is strongly influenced by the search for his identity and conflict between Europe and Africa. Love, melancholy and nature meditations are themes of his poems. His language is characterized by colloquial elements.
