Rupert Ignaz Mayr

Rupert Ignaz Mayr ( * 1646 in Schärding / Inn, † February 7, 1712 in Freising ) was a German violinist, composer and Kapellmeister.

Life and work

Rupert Ignaz Mayr (now Upper Austria ) was born 1646 in Schärding am Inn. Little is known about his youth and his musical education, he probably should have gotten lessons at the nearby Passau. 1678 he is a violinist of the Episcopal Chapel in Eichstätt and partly also in Regensburg, 1683-1685 at the bishop's court in Passau and from 1685 at the electoral court orchestra at Maximilian II Emanuel in Munich. The Elector sent him to further studies to Paris to Jean -Baptiste Lully. From 1706 he was Kapellmeister at episcopal Johann Franz Eckher of Kapfing and Liechteneck in Freising, where he died on 7 February 1712.

According to its mission fields as a violinist and Hofkapellmeister Mayr has created preferably church music and instrumental works. We are especially famous seven orchestra suites " Pythagorean Schmid - Fuencklein " of 1692, with whom he alludes to the legend of Pythagoras in the smithy on the discovery of the number ratios of musical intervals. He has also for some school dramas (see also Jesuit theater ) music delivered as from some traditional documents can be seen. Similar to Georg Muffat, who was also a pupil of Lully, and Johann Philipp Krieger he combines French, Italian and German elements to a high baroque musical language.
