Rupes
Rupes ( Latin for " divide", " furrow ", " crack " ) is in geology and planetary science, the term for elongate canyon-like fault lines, gutters, ditches or ground levels on the Earth's moon and other celestial bodies in the solar system. As a small, recessed line structures of up to 400 km in length, they are a sign of tension forces within the rock or ice crust.
On the Moon Rupes some of these have more the character of a ground level as a rut, as the Rupes Altai and the "Long Wall " ( Rupes Recta ). The latter is by no means a 100 km long steep slope, as they appear in the half- moon in grazing light, but only about 10 ° inclined and with rising sun almost invisible.
