Rurikovo Gorodische

Rurikowo Gorodischtsche, accurate transcription Rjurikowo Gorodischtsche (Russian Рюриково Городище, " Rurik fortified city "; = Scandinavian name Holmgard " city on the spar " ) is an early medieval settlement of Rus, about two kilometers south of Novgorod, situated on the right bank of the Volkhov River near its effluent from the Ilmensee in Russia. Immediately above the Rurikowo Gorodischtsche opens Sievers channel in the Volkhov, which connects bypassing the Ilmen since the beginning of the 19th century MSTA and Volkhov.

The place served even before the establishment of Novgorod as a trading center on the route between Scandinavia and Byzantium, but lost with the rise of the city its importance. The place served no later than 1270, the Prince of Novgorod as a favorite residence because they had lost in the self-confident patrician city of Novgorod their power to the boyars and the veche.

The only building partially preserved is the Annunciation Church (Russian церковь Благовещения, Tserkov Blagoweschtschenija ), which was originally built in 1103 and 1342/1343 rebuilt. Since its destruction by artillery fire during the Second World War, the church is a ruin.
