RusnÄ—
Rusnė ( German carbon black) is a small town ( miestelis ) in the Rajongemeinde Šilutė ( Heydekrug ) in the western part of Lithuania in the district of Klaipeda.
Name
The village is located in the historic East Prussia ( Memel ) in the tribal territory of the Prussian scarf Auer. In the dialect of the scarf Auer, the name " place which is encircled " means.
Geography
The town is located on an island in the delta of the river Memel, on the Hauptschifffahrtsweg Atmata ( Atmath ) about 12 kilometers away from the Curonian Lagoon and thus is located in the Regional Park " Nemuno Deltos " ( Memel delta ). Immediately southeast of Rusnė runs the border with the Russian Kaliningrad oblast, where the Elchniederung begins. To the northeast is the town Šilutė ( Heydekrug ).
History
Economy
Because of its natural environment and its largely preserved typical local image Rusnė is increasingly becoming an attraction for tourism in Lithuania. Eco-tourism here has a lot of popularity since one can observe several rare species of birds particularly during periods of bird migration. In addition Rusnė is a popular spot for fishing. Furthermore, there are ferry services across the lagoon to the Curonian Spit.
