History

The place is by Stephen W. Ryan, a farmer from the people of the Quapaw (Arkansas ), named. He settled in 1875 in the region - at that time the territory of the Chickasaw tribe in Indian Territory - and had extensive landholdings. Its about 1877 built house was the first residential building in the village. The actual urban development began with the construction of a station on the Chicago, rock Iceland and Pacific Railroad in 1892, three years later, a major fire destroyed almost the young settlement. From 1906 to 1912 Ryan was briefly the county seat of Jefferson County before this function was moved by referendum after Waurika. Most residents had Ryan in 1920 with 1379 citizens.
