Sacred Heart Church (KÅ‘szeg, Hungary)

The Sacred Heart Church (Hungarian Jézus szíve templom ) in the Hungarian city of Kőszeg is the Roman Catholic parish church of the city and an outstanding example of the Gothic Revival.

Description

The church was designed by the Viennese architect Ludwig Beautiful and built in 1892-1894 on the main square of the city. The three-aisled hall church closes in the West with a triconch choir, in the east with an enlarged narthex. Before that stands above the portal of the 57-meter- high main tower, which is flanked by two smaller peaks. The bells located there plays a tune from Georg Friedrich Handel's Saul. The wooden carved altars are from Vienna and Tyrol. Most of the picture windows were donated by local families and show Jesus Christ, Mary, Joseph of Nazareth and Hungarian saints like Stephen I, Gisela of Bavaria, St. Imre, Ladislaus I, Elizabeth of Thuringia and Margaret of Hungary.

Equipment

The medieval and baroque furniture has come from the old James Church. These include gold work, but also two goblets, which were produced in 1421 and 1486. The organ dates from the Rieger Brothers, was installed in the church in 1894 and has 21 registers. What is striking is the color of the interior, which was designed by Otto Kött. In keeping with the polychrome interior and the roof is covered with different colored tiles. 1936 and 1987 made ​​the final restorations.
