In -ups for moves are within the Defensive Back Fields ( also called secondary ), the abbreviations used for safeties SS for the Strong Safety and FS for the Free Safety. The rest of the players of the Defensive Back Fields are the cornerbacks (CB).

Strong Safety

The Strong Safety plays against the "strong" side of the forward line, ie on the same side as the tight end or fullback of the opposing offense. The Strong Safety is usually of more powerful stature as the free safety and is also closer to the line of scrimmage at the start of a turn. Its main task is to disrupt the opponent's running game.

Free Safety

The Free Safety must be at the beginning of your turn "read" the formation of the attacking team and guess their moves. It should thus be able to intercept the " deep " passes of the opposing quarterbacks. As a free safety so he is used to hedge the cornerbacks.

Free or Strong Safety can also directly attack at the beginning of a turn the quarterback, then this is the so-called Safety Blitz. Since this attack for the Defense is very risky, it is rarely applied in practice.
