The construction costs were so high that the shipyard went bankrupt in July 1966. On 2 October 1965, the Saga Fjord launched on its maiden voyage in scheduled service to New York.

The Saga Fjord was measured with 24 528 GT, 188.88 meters long and 24.49 meters wide. In seven decks found up to 789 passengers place, these were supplied by about 350 crew members. With a drive power of 17,650 kW, the ship reached a top speed of 20 knots.

In October 1983, the Norwegian shipping company NAC was taken over by the Cunard Line, and the Saga Fjord then drove together with her sister ship built at a later Vista Fjord with the traditional orange chimney colors of the Cunard Line, under the flag of the Bahamas. The passenger ship was one in the 1970s and 1980s, one of the ten best ships in the world and was honored by the magazine " Condé Nast Traveller " with 5 star plus. During the period of service for the Norwegian America Line (NAL, 1965-1980 ), Norwegian American Cruises ( NAC, a subsidiary of NAL, 1980-1983 ) and Cunard Line ( 1983-1996 ), the Saga Fjord was in use and in the world first four months of each year traveling around the world. During her service with the Cunard Line, the Saga Fjord was in the summer months (June to September), mainly in Alaska on the route Vancouver - Vancouver used - Anchorage. The ship was one of the first passenger ships of this size, a landing permit for the Galapagos Islands (1993 ) was issued.

In 1996 the ship was chartered by Transocean Tours and renamed Gripsholm. In the same year it was at Saga Shipping Co. Ltd.. , sold in Nassau, Bahamas, operated them under the name of Saga Rose.

In 2006 the ship was last updated. In November 2009, the Saga Rose was decommissioned because the requirements of SOLAS 2010 were not met. Plans to use the ship as a floating hotel in Southampton failed. The ship was finally sold for scrapping.

On 7 December 2009 the ship left Southampton. After a trip halfway around the world ended the journey of the Saga Rose in Jyangyin where one of China's largest ship-breaking yards located. There began in late 2011, the scrapping.
