Saint-Genou

Saint- Genou is a commune with 1016 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011), department of Indre in the Centre region. The village lies on the River Indre, around 33 kilometers west of Châteauroux.

History

Saint- Genou goes back to one in the 9th century by the Count of Bourges on a " strategy " mentioned place today Estrées, endowed Benedictine abbey. After being destroyed by the Normans, it was a little further downstream rebuilt. The there preserved relic of St. Genulfus gave the village that developed around its abbey, its name. At the time of the French Revolution was a commune of Saint- Genou.

  • Romanesque church of Sainte- Vierge - The church from the 12th/13th. Century is classified as a monument historique since 1862. The three-aisled basilica heard despite the lack of long- house, fell prey to the destruction in 1676, with the genuine Romanesque monuments in Berry. In addition to the partially restored crossing the choir house church has been preserved with continuing over the transept aisles. Typical is the Romanesque barrel vault of the nave and ( narrow ) side aisles; additionally structured by sham galleries in the form of blind arcades walls above the arches of the nave; overlying clerestory; lower, by a curved wall from the ship separate eastern part with a semicircular apse flanked by two chapels; remarkable Kapitellplastik.
