Place name

The unusual name of locality is often reason to speculation about its origin. The French-Canadian Linguistic Society Commission de de Québec toponymy indicates the etymological origin of the name from the Acadian French. In this French language variety is the HaHa for an unexpected obstacle or a sudden ending road; this term is intended to refer to the nearby Lac Témiscouata. The explanation for the Louis is less clear. Either it is a reminder of the first colonists of the Marquis Louis region or to Louis -Antoine Proulx, who was vicar in Rivière -du -Loup. When possible, Louis -Nicolas Bernier is contemplated, who was abbot. The exclamation mark in place names have come to be commonly known, but they are now officially used in place names. Another place with an exclamation mark in place names is the English Westward Ho!.
