Saint-Martin-de-Bonfossé

Saint -Martin -de- Bonfossé is a commune with 547 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the department of Manche in Basse-Normandie region. It belongs to the canton Canisy and the Local Government Association, Communauté de Communes du Canton de Canisy.

Geography

Saint -Martin -de- Bonfossé located on the peninsula Cotentin, 9 kilometers south-west of Saint- Lô, between the neighboring communities Canisy in the West, Saint- Ébremond -de- Bonfossé in the Northeast and Saint -Samson -de- Bonfossé in the southeast. The Joigne flows north-west of the town center by the municipality.

History

1793 received Saint -Martin -de- Bonfossé as Saint Martin de Bonfossé in the wake of the French Revolution ( 1789-1799 ) the status of a municipality and 1801 as Saint -Martin -de- Bonfossé the right to local self-government. 1832, the village of Saint- Sauveur -de- Bonfossé was incorporated.

Attractions

The Manor House Manoir de Bonfossé was built in the last quarter of the 16th century. It belonged to the family Gourfaleur. Jean de Gourfaleur was mentioned in 1555 and was a captain in Saint- Lô 1574-1584. Chapel, wall elevation and trompe l'oeil murals were registered historiques (historical monuments ) in the additional list of Monuments 2003. The mansion is privately owned.

The parish church of Saint -Martin -de- Bonfossé dates from the 13th century. From that time, however, only the choir and the bell tower have been preserved. The porch dates from the 16th century, the nave was rebuilt in the 19th century. The wall paintings inside the church were registered in 1994 in the Additional List of Monuments historiques. The altar, Gradin, tabernacle, reredos and two statues, representing Martin of Tours and Saint Nicholas were manufactured in 1747 and classified as a monument historique in 1975.
