Saint Peter Port

Saint Peter Port and St. Peter Port is the capital and main port town of Guernsey. The place is situated on the east coast of the island and has 16,488 inhabitants ( 2001). Thus, about one- third of the inhabitants live in the capital of Guernsey. In French, the second official language of Guernsey, is called the city of Saint- Pierre port. Officially, only the English spelling is used.

In 2001, the city had 16,488 inhabitants. The surface area is 6.677 km ².

Boroughs

Saint Peter Port is divided into four cantons ( cantons ):

  • Canton 1 or North Canton
  • Canton 2 or Canton of the North - West
  • Canton 3 or Canton of the South - West
  • Canton 4 or Canton of the South

The cantons are electoral districts. From each canton of Saint Peter Port is a representative each elected States of Guernsey, in addition to the two representatives of the Saint Peter Port Parish as a whole. Thus, the capital of Guernsey is more strongly represented in the insular parliament.

Furthermore includes the islands of Herm and Jethou to the city area, but to none of the four cantons. They belong to the constituency Saint Peter Port South.

Attractions

  • The Castle Cornet is on the island Cornet rock in front of the city
  • To the north lies the dolmen Le Dehus.
  • The Guernsey Museum about the history of the island.

Victor Hugo lived after the exile of 1856-1870 in St. Peter Port. His former house, Hauteville House or Victor Hugo 's House can be visited.

Beaches

The beaches of St. Peter Port are part of Belle Greve Bay, Moores Bay, Soldiers Bay and Part of Fermain Bay.

Port

The harbor of St. Peter Port is subject to a large tidal range and can be run only during floods. Apart from a few fishing trawlers, it houses a large number of sports and hiking sailors. Cruise ships are at anchor outside the harbor.
