Saint Petersburg Dam

The Petersburg Dam (Russian Комплекс защитных сооружений Санкт - Петербурга от наводнений, kompleks zaščitnych sooruženij Santa Peterburga ot navodnenij ) is a flood control dam, which was cross built by the Newabucht to protect the Russian city of Saint Petersburg from flooding. It leads from Malaya Ishora ( Малая Ижора ) in the south over the western part of the island Kotlin on which is the city of Kronstadt, to the northerly Sestrorezk ( Сестрорецк ). About the building a highway that runs as part of the ring road around St. Petersburg.

Construction of the gigantic project was 1978. Unlike most floods from rivers, the floods on the Neva stir not because of the river from its headwaters brings more water, but there are storm flood in which West wind pushes into the Gulf of Finland and the prevents outflow of the water or, in extreme cases, reverses the flow direction. Since the founding of the city 1703 297 floods were recorded, three of which with a rise of the water level by more than three meters.

After the biggest flood of 1824, the engineer bases developed ( Пётр Петрович Базен ) the plan of a protective dam by the Gulf of Finland, which was then considered but not executable.

Later, other projects for flood protection of the city were developed, including a western variant at approximately the route of today's protective dam and an eastern variant along the western shore strip of the city. The western variant was in the 1960s by the State Hydrological Institute in Leningrad under NE Kondratieff developed.

In 1979, the work on the embankment of the dam according to the western variant. In December 1984, the island was connected Kotlin from the north to the mainland. The construction was canceled in the 1990s for reasons of environmental protection: The dam interfered with the circulation of coastal waters, large parts of the water stood still, the water quality dropped significantly. Fears were that the entire bay could turn into a swamp. Because of these concerns on the one hand and the much- desired flood protection on the other hand the project in the city was very controversial.
