Sestroretsk

Sestrorezk (Russian Сестрорецк, Finnish Siestarjoki, Swedish Systerbäck ) is a town at the mouth of the river Sestra in the Gulf of Finland, about 35 kilometers northwest of the center of Saint Petersburg. It belongs administratively to Rajon spa in the city of Saint Petersburg and has 37 248 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

History

A Swedish town on the site of the present Sestrorezk was first mentioned in 1643. 1714 and here the Great founded by Tsar Peter a new settlement, which later became the name Sestrorezk after the river Sestra ( Sestrorezk = literally " city on the river Sestra " ) received. 1724 was there built a weapons factory, led by Georg Wilhelm Henning, who was in the 19th century one of the leading arms manufacturers in the Russian Empire.
