Sal Nistico

Salvatore " Sal" Nistico ( born April 12, 1940 in Syracuse (New York) as Salvatore Nistico, † March 3, 1991 in Bern ) was a saxophonist of modern jazz.

Nistico started on the alto saxophone, joined in 1956 on tenor, but also played some time on the baritone saxophone. First, he played rhythm & blues, 1959, he was then a member of the Jazz Brothers by Chuck Mangione and Gap. Subsequently, he was from 1962 to 1965 member of Woody Herman's Herd, which was given due to his impulsive solos new attention. In 1965 he became a member of the band of Count Basie, but returned several times ( 1968-1970, 1971, 1981-1982 ) back to Herman to play with the stove, as on the album Woody's Winners to listen to solos in " Northwest Passage" and "Woody 's Whistle ". He also worked with Chet Baker, Don Ellis, Stan Tracey and Buddy Rich. He then taught at the Swiss Jazz School Bern and played in Central Europe with Jimmy Woode, Benny Bailey and with the quartet of Joe Haider. Shortly after his return to the U.S., he again had drug problems that contributed to his death.
