Bob Cranshaw

Melbourne R. "Bob" Cranshaw ( born December 10, 1932 in Evans Town, Illinois) is on American jazz bassist (double bass, tuba, electric bass) of modern jazz. He is a long -standing partner of Sonny Rollins.

Life and work

Cranshaw was a founding member of the short-lived Jazz Band MJT 3 ( Modern Jazz Trio) with Frank Strozier on alto sax, Harold Mabern on piano and Walter Perkins on drums. The band consisted of Chicago until 1962; Cranshaw and Perkins were also a member of the backing band of singer Carmen McRae, and took with her in 1961, the album Carmen McRae Sings Lover Man and Other Billie Holiday Classics.

In 1961 he became known for his collaboration with drummer Mickey Roker, who for many years Mary Lou Williams accompanied ( as late as 1977 with Cecil Taylor). Cranshaw 1964 organized a jam session with the band Blue Flames, with Shirley Scott, Stanley Turrentine and Otis Finch (released on Prestige Records ). During the 1960s and 1970s, Bob Cranshaw played on the TV show Sesame Street. He also worked for hundreds of television shows and movies. He participated also in the movie The Blue Note Story, a 90-minute documentary on the jazz label Blue Note Records. 1973 and 1974 he played at the Montreux Jazz Festival.

Throughout his musical career, Bob Cranshaw played with Eddie Harris, Ella Fitzgerald, Coleman Hawkins, Sonny Rollins, Oscar Peterson, Vera Auer, Jimmy Heath, Johnny Hodges, Grant Green, Jackie McLean, Thelonious Monk, James Moody, Lee Morgan, Wes Montgomery, Oscar Peterson, Buddy Rich, George Shearing, Wayne Shorter, Horace Silver, JJ Johnson, Shirley Scott, Stanley Turrentine; McCoy Tyner and Joe Williams and many other musicians.

His name is connected with the classical sessions for Blue Note Records in the 1960s, when he played with musicians such as Lee Morgan on his classic The Sidewinder or Grant Green Idle Moments on. With Sonny Rollins, on the album The Bridge he helped him a long relationship that continues to the present. Cranshaw also played live shows for the tap dancer Maurice Hines with his friend, drummer Paul Goldberg.
