Salima (township)

Salima is a city in the central region of Malawi. It has 32,000 inhabitants ( 2006 estimate ) and is capital of the district, which has an area of 2196 km ² and 248 214 inhabitants ( 2003). Salima is on the railway line Blantyre Lilongwe and on the road Balaka - Chipoka - Lilongwe, which is very well developed, especially in the latter parts with German development aid. The city is connected to the national power grid. Important economic sector is tourism in the area of ​​Senga, with more than ten kilometers of sandy beach, which is very popular destination for weekend holidays, the population of Lilongwe. The 20 km long road from Salima Senga after is a well-developed, paved road. There are several lodges with restaurants and overnight services for upscale tourism, but also basic accommodation. The FAO maintains the Lifidzi Goat Breeding Centre for dairy and meat production by goats.
