Salman Khurshid

Salman Khurshid (Hindi: सलमान खुर्शीद; * January 1, 1953 in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh ) is a politician of the Indian National Congress and, since October 28, 2012 Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Cabinet of India Manmohan Singh II

Biography

Kurshid was born into a family of politicians. His father Khurshed Alam Khan was a minister in the Government of India in the 1980s, Governor of Goa from 1989 to 1991 and intermittently Governor of Karnataka from 1991 to 1999. His maternal grandfather Zakir Hussain was an Indian state president of 1967 until 1969.

Khurshid studied at the Jesuit -led St. Xavier's High School in Patna, Delhi Public School, Mathura Road, Delhi and on Christian -run St. Stephen 's College in Delhi. He then earned the degree of Master of Arts ( MA) in English and a Bachelor of Civil Law (BCL ) in Law at St Edmund Hall College, University of Oxford in England. Khurshid began his political career in the Indian National Congress under Indira Gandhi in the early 1980s. In June 1991, he was Deputy Minister of Trade and January 1993 to June 1996 Minister of State for Foreign Affairs in the Indian government. After the Indian general election, 2009 he was Minister of State for Minority Affairs (until January 2011), thereafter from Januar to July 2011, Minister of Water Resources and after a cabinet reshuffle in October 2012 finally Secretary of State.

Salman Khurshid 's Muslim married, and has three sons and a daughter.
