Saltwater Band

The Saltwater Band is an Australian music group from Galiwin'ku on Elcho Iceland (one of the Wessel Islands), located about 560 kilometers from Darwin. The members belong to the ethnic group of Yolngu and sing mostly in their native language. Their songs are a mix of traditional songs and reggae or ska -influenced pop. One of the band members, Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu, who currently also works solo, is a close relative of Mandawuy Yunupingu, Yothu Yindi from the singer, and has in the past been a member of this group.

The first CD of the Saltwater band Gapu Damurrun, sold more than 10,000 times at the time record for a Musikakt the Northern Territory. Their album Djarridjarri was nominated for the 2004 Aria Music Award for Best World Music Album. It also received the Deadly Award for best album release of the year.
