Wessel Islands

The Wessel Islands (English Wessel Islands ) are an archipelago in Australia. They belong to the Northern Territory and extending in a chain northeast of Arnhem Land to sea.

Marchinbar Iceland is the largest island of the group, more islands are Elcho Iceland, Iceland Rimbija ( the furthest in the ocean of the islands ), Guluwuru Iceland, Raragala Iceland, Iceland Stevens, Burgunngura Iceland, Iceland Djeergaree, Yargara Iceland, Iceland Drysdale, Jirrgari Iceland, Iceland Graham, Alger Iceland, Iceland Abbott and Howard Iceland.

Bumaga Iceland and Iceland Warnawi are counted to both the Wessel Islands as well as to the Cunningham Islands.

Discovery of the Wessel Islands

The Wessel Islands were by Pieter Piertszoon (also: Pierterszoon or Pietersen ) discovered and named after the ship " Wessel ". 1636 sent the Governor-General of Batavia Anthonie van Diemen an expedition to the north. The fleet consisted of two ships, yachts Klein Amsterdam and Wessel. Commander of Gerrit Thomas Pool, who was killed on April 28, 1636 during the expedition to New Guinea. Pieter Piertszoon led the expedition continued to return to Batavia. He discovered on the trip: the Cobourg Peninsula, Melville Island and the entrance to Dundas Street ( separates Bathurst and Melville Island from the mainland ).
