Anthony van Diemen

Antonio van Diemen (also Anton, Anthonie, Anthony, Anthony, * 1593 in Culemborg, † April 19, 1645 in Batavia ( now Jakarta )) became governor general of the Dutch East Indies.

Work

Van Diemen went to India and quickly rose to the dignity of an ordinary Council. On January 1, 1636, he was appointed governor-general. As such, he concluded an advantageous treaty with the King of Ternate, led a successful war against the rulers of Amboina, the Portuguese settlements seized in Ceylon and Malacca, forced the viceroy of Goa and the king of Fars to peace and was the founder of Dutch trade in Tonkin. He led the discovery of named after him Van Diemen's Land Island of Tasmania. He was not less attention to the internal administration.
