Laurens Reael

Doctor Laurens Reael ( born October 22, 1583 Amsterdam, † October 21, 1637 ) was a participant in the Dutch East India Company and a Dutch admiral. He came from a patrician family of Reael.

Life

In his youth, Laurens Reael could distinguish, especially in modern languages ​​as well as mathematics. He studied law at Leiden University, where he went also 1608.

In May 1611 he traveled as a commander of the Royal Navy of four ships to the Dutch East Indies, where he was in 1616 elected as governor. After the Office of Jan Pieterszoon Coen was taken over in 1619, he returned to his homeland.

In a letter ( letter from Makian, August 20, 1618) he reported in detail by the spice cultivation in the north Malukus. He observed that the people now often cultivated again due to the driven upwards Dutch monopoly prices for rice and sago in the fields instead of rice spices, so as to avoid the dependence of the spices as cash crops.
