Hendrik Brouwer

Hendrik Brouwer (c. 1581; † August 7, 1643 ) was a Dutch navigator and Governor-General of Dutch East Indies from 1632 to 1636.

Life and work

Little is known about the youth of Hendrik Brouwer. As commander of a fleet of three ships of the Dutch East India Company on the way to the Dutch East Indies in 1611, he discovered a favorable sea route from South Africa to Indonesia, which is called the Brouwer Route. This sea saw before to stay off the Cape of Good Hope at about 35-45 ° south latitude, and only at about 110 ° east longitude be heading northbound on Batavia. Although this route appears at first sight longer than the previously known, but it offered several advantages: First, it meant a gain of time, because you do with the ship on this south latitude, all the time within the Roaring Forties, a strong west wind zone is located, and on the other hand you could bypass the other two routes then used this way. The Mozambique Channel between Madagascar and Mozambique was in fact controlled by the Portuguese and avoided the sea east of Madagascar because of its dangerous currents. However, neither the Portuguese nor the VOC ( East India Company ) was then the known continent of Australia, so that subsequent ships occasionally beached on the offshore reefs near the coast of Western Australia, such as the 1629 Batavia. In addition, Brouwer is also mentioned as the discoverer Roaring Forties.

In 1643 he embarked on a journey to Chile to fight there against the Spaniards, and to search for gold. In that time the idea of Terra Australis Incognita, the great, undiscovered " southern continent " was still prevalent. When passing through the Le Maire Strait Brouwer recognized now by chance that the Le Maire Staten Landt could not be said " southern continent", nor that the Staten Landt would be associated with New Zealand. He proved, indirectly, that New Zealand was in fact not part of the Staten Landt. This fact resulted in the following years to the renaming of the current New Zealand.

During the Chile expedition Brouwer eventually died. About the journey of an eyewitness is obtained, the German soldier Caspar Schmalkalden.
