Salzachgeier

The Salzachgeier

The Salzachgeier ( 2469 m above sea level. A. ) is a rugged peak on the edge of the Kitzbühel Alps on the border of Salzburg and Tyrol. In the Karen and high pastures of his Ostabhangs and the two neighboring peaks Fünfmandling ( 2401 m) and floating head ( 2354 m ) are the headwaters of the Salzach River, the largest river north of the Salzburg Central Alps.

The Salzachgeier is a double peak, converge in the five sharp ridges. The eastern summit is only three meters lower and protrude directly through the above two source areas (Salzach floor and Schwebenalm ) up.

While the southern slopes of the three peaks is lowered against the Gerlos Pass out the watershed ( 1,983 m Salzachjoch ) is located just a kilometer away from the Ostkaren north. Here steep is located on the border over the Roßwildalm a mountain chapel, Markkirchl, and something deeper Neue Bamberger Hütte DAV. To the west are the slopes as steep ( but less rocky ) and dehydrate for Fromm Bach towards Kitzbühel.

The Salzachgeier part of the tour area of Bamberg's hut and is a very popular winter ski tour.
