Sam Szafran
Sam Szafran ( born November 19, 1934 in Paris) is a French artist.
Life
Szafran was born as the son of Polish- Jewish immigrants in Paris. He spent his childhood in the Quartier des Halles, before he had to go into hiding during the war, first in the country, then in Switzerland. After he initially worked as a young abstract artists in Atelier de la Grande Chaumiere in Henri Goetz, Szafran tested at the beginning of the 1960s, for the first time the technique of pastel. In the Paris of the postwar years, he met Jean Arp, Yves Klein, Jean -Paul Riopelle, Joan Mitchell, Alberto Giacometti, Henri Cartier -Bresson and Martine Franck. In 1963 he married the Swiss Lilette cellar, a year later their son Sebastien was born. After humble years in Friends made available to studios, they moved to Malakoff 1974.
Work
The discovery of the pastel was for Szafran of great importance. Since the early 60s he used the chalks of Roché Pastels, which are produced in the Maison du Pastel of the three sisters of the Roché family in its recipe. Henceforth, this technique certain his work, whether alone, in combination with a charcoal pencil or watercolor. At the same time, his work summarized thematically in that time. Numerous series of stairs, greenhouses and workshops attest to his obsession, which then as now dominate anachronistic technique of pastel painting as perfect as virtuosic. In times of abstraction and a flourish this painting in its objectivity as in their effort to precision craftsmanship a rejection of most trends in contemporary art is; it is an art to concepts, trends and fast changing fashions. So it is no wonder that the works of the French artist have been exhibited rarely and only in his home country or the French-speaking Switzerland.

1993 Szafran received the Grand Prix des Arts de la Ville de Paris.
2008, the exhibition Le Mystère et l' éclat were in the frame. Pastels du musée d' Orsay in Paris' Musee d' Orsay presents two of his pastels.
2011 awarded the Prix 3ième Piero Crommelynck
