Sam Weller Widdowson

Samuel Widdowson (* April 16 1851 in Hucknall, Nottinghamshire, † May 9, 1927 in Beeston, Nottinghamshire ) was an English football player and functionary.

Career

Widdowson played for Nottingham Forest, whose chairman he was 1879-1884. On 13 August 1880 he played against Scotland his only game for England.

Widdowson has introduced a number of innovations in football. In 1874 he invented the shin guards, as he carved out corresponding part of the Cricket protective clothing and carried outside the nozzle. In the same year he let enter the patent. He also gave impetus to the referee's whistle (previously used the referee flag signals), goal nets and floodlights. However, his idea for gas lamps floodlighting could not prevail because of security concerns and the lack of gas.
