Samal, Davao del Norte

Samal Iceland or more precisely the Garden City of Samal Iceland is an island with city rights in the Philippines. The long-winded name is often used in the abbreviated form, as IGaCoS.

The island with city rights in the Province of Davao del Norte, located in the Davao Gulf in the southeast of the island of Mindanao.

In many coastal areas mangroves are planted ( www.regenwald.org ) that are protected for some years. This ensures the fish spawning new places, new birds are nesting areas and helps to strengthen coastal protection.

Geography

The Garden City of Samal City Iceland consists of a group of nine islands in the Davao Gulf. It is located a few kilometers east of Davao City. The largest of the islands of their city area is called Samal Iceland, the second largest is the island Talikud.

The area is 12 km wide and 30 km long and has on its 118 km long coastline, numerous beach resorts.

Puting Bato The is with a height of 411.2 meters above sea level, the highest point on the island.

The total area of the city area covers 301.3 km ².

Culture and Language

In the city the dialects of Cebuano ( Visayan ), Tagalog and Samar are represented.

In addition to immigrants from Luzon and the Visayas, here lives the indigenous ethnic group of Samar and there is a significant Muslim population.

Economy

On the island, some local industries such as the furniture and handicraft production are represented in household goods. There are also many companies that have specialized in the manufacture of toys and gift items.

Besides fishing, agriculture also has a presence in the city.

However, the main economic factor is tourism. In addition to more than 60 beach resorts, the best known and most worth seeing is the Pearl Farm Beach Resort, there are a number of other attractions: the Bat Cave, Delphinsichtungen, mountaineering and mountain biking, scuba diving etc.

Through his numerous coral reefs, the island city is also a paradise for divers and snorkelers.

History

On July 8, 1948 Samal was amended by Executive Order No. 151, signed by President Elpidio Quirino, elevated to the status of a municipality. Later, the island was divided into three independent municipality: Samal, Babak & Kaputian.

Samal eventually was appointed to the city in 1998 by the Republic Act No. 8472. With this appointment, the three administrative communities Samal, Babak, and Kaputian were compiled into a single administrative unit. The law came through the ratification of the citizens on March 7, 1998.

The official name has since " Garden City of Samal Iceland ".
