Samarendra Nath Roy

Samarendra Nath Roy ( born December 11, 1906 in Calcutta, † July 23, 1964 in Jasper ( Alberta) ) was an Indian statistician.

Life

His father was editor of The Tribune, Lahore. Roy studied at the University of Calcutta and the Presidency College in Calcutta with a Bachelor 's degree in mathematics in 1928 and her Master's degree in 1931. Then he dealt with cosmology from NR Sen. When he a computer for the numerical solution of a partial differential equation under his research was looking for, he found it only at the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI ) of PC Mahalanobis. This awakened his interest in statistics and in 1934 he joined the Institute in and conducted research on multivariate statistics. In 1938 he was Lecturer in the Department of Applied Mathematics, University of Calcutta. 1946 to 1949 he was Assistant Director at ISI and directed 1947/48 the few years after its establishment, Department of Statistics of the University of Calcutta. In 1949 he was a visiting professor at Columbia University, returned briefly to Calcutta and then took in 1950 a professor of statistics at the University of North Carolina.

He was a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and the International Statistical Institute.
