Samuel J. Friedman Theatre

The theater is located at 261 West 47th Street. It was built by architect Herbert J. Krapp and opened on 7 December 1925. 950 seats in the theater. In the 1930s, the theater of the Federal Theatre Project 's Living Newspaper was used. From 1952 to 1961, the US-based television station CBS leased the building as a radio and television studio. 1968 took place the premiere of the musical Hair in the theater. In 1987, the building was damaged by a major fire which destroyed the interior. In the following years, the theater building was empty. Several ownership changes made ​​between 1987 and 2001. The building was finally added to the list of New York City Landmark and acquired in 2001 by the Manhattan Theatre Club and renovated. In 2008, the Biltmore Theatre was renamed. The new name honors the Broadway publicist Samuel J. Friedman.
