San Fernando de Apure was the capital of the Venezuelan state of Amazonas to the early 19th century. Today the capital city of Puerto Ayacucho.

History

The city, formerly the village Puinave Maracoa, was founded in 1758 by José Solano and after Ferdinand VI. appointed by Spain.

1760 San Fernando was burned down and rebuilt only in 1765 by the Capuchin missionary Fray José A. de Xerez.

On April 24, 1800 Alexander von Humboldt visited the Conucos de Síquita and stayed in San Fernando. Also, the geographer Agustín Codazzi visited the city in the 1840s.

From 1908, the rubber dealer Tomás Funes dominated the city. He was executed on 30 January 1921 on the orders of Arévalo Cedeño on the Plaza Bolívar and just buried there.

1928 San Fernando then lost the capital status to Puerto Ayacucho.

The city's population in 1997 was approximately 5,000 inhabitants, in 2007 this had grown to 15,000.

Infrastructure

Among the most important buildings in the city include: City Hall, City Hall, Prefecture, three primary schools, a secondary school, a public library, a Catholic and a Protestant church and the hospital " María Garrido " with laboratory, pharmacy, and a special department for malaria control.

Traffic Technically, the city is served by an airport and a small harbor.
