San Jacinto Monument

The San Jacinto Monument is a 173.7 -meter-high column, which was built in La Porte (Texas ) from 1936 to 1939.

The design comes from the Texas architect Alfred Finn. The monument, which reminds in its construction of the Washington Monument, carries on its top a 220 -ton star. It commemorates the Battle of San Jacinto, the decisive battle of the Texas Revolution. The star is the symbol of the state of Texas. The column is located directly at the ship channel from Houston and is the second tallest monument in the United States.

In 1960, it was declared a National Historic Landmark and is therefore in the National Register of Historic Places of the United States. In 1992, it was added to the List of Historic Civil Engineering Landmarks, the American Society of Civil Engineers.
