History

The earliest evidence of human settlement in this region are from Los Escullos, an approximately 8 km north of San José lying place, and have been dated to the Middle Stone Age, some even to the Paleolithic. In the Neolithic and the Chalcolithic period, the first settlements (2500 BC to 1800 BC ) could be assigned to the Los Millares culture, while the finds from the Bronze Age to the El- Argar culture ( created from 1800 to 1300 BC. ) belong. These settlements were in the vicinity of numerous copper mines in the area, where there was water and shelter in caves. Both cultures are regarded today as the most important in Western Europe in order to study the beginnings of metalworking. Its decline took place in the Late Bronze Age ( 1000-800 BC), when the Tartars appeared at the mouth of the Guadalquivir River and the western culture repressed.

Between 1733 and 1735 the fortress of San Jose was built on the coast of Andalusia on the orders of Philip V. It was equipped with three batteries to monitor and protect this stretch of coast. The nearby beaches of Cala Cala Higuera Genovese and were a popular anchorage for pirates to replenish their water and food supplies.
