San Marco, Rome

The Church of San Marco, Basilica di San Marco Evangelista completely al Campidoglio (Latin: Sancti Marci ) is a minor basilica in Rome. It is the regional church of the Venetians.

It lies on Piazza San Marco and is almost completely surrounded by the Palazzo Venezia, the former Roman branch of the Serenissima Repubblica di San Marco. The cloister of the church is also the court of the palace.

The church was founded by Pope Marcus 337-340 in place of an older oratory and 827-844 under Pope Gregory IV rebuilt. During the construction of the Palazzo Venezia in the 15th century, the church was again changed significantly. The Renaissance façade was probably designed by Giuliano da Maiano. The interior of the church was restored in 1740-1750 by Filippo Barigioni in Baroque style.

The mosaic in the apse dates from the 9th century and shows Christ surrounded by the apostles, and some saints.
