The Basilica of San Sebastiano fuori le mura (Latin Sancti Sebastiani extra muros, dt Saint Sebastian Outside the Walls ), as the name of the title and San Sebastiano Catacombs all (Latin Sancti Sebastiani ad Catacumbas, dt Saint Sebastian at the Catacombs ) is one of the seven pilgrim churches of Rome. She is also a parish church.

The church is located approximately six kilometers south of the present city center and near the Vatican directly above the complex of Sebastian Catacombs (former grave of the martyr Sebastian ) on the Via Appia Antica.

The church was built in the 4th century AD under Emperor Constantine and was originally consecrated as Basilica Apostolorum Saints Peter and Paul. The point at which it was built, had the corridor designation ad catacumbas ( in the ( valley ) sink ). From this corridor designation, the term catacombs deduced. The associated monastery belonged to the Benedictine order and then to the canons regular, but went on in 1171 to the Cistercians, who came from the monastery of Saint- Sulpice in the French department of Ain ​​and thus from the filiation of primary Pontigny Abbey. 1260 the monastery was however the monastery of Santa Maria di Falleri assumed. Its present Baroque appearance was the Basilica in 1612. 1614 took over the monastery reform Fulienser. In 1802 joined the Italian Cistercian Congregation. In 1826 it went over to the Friars Minor. During the 20th century it was discovered during excavations of ancient Rome and Christian tombs, ancient houses and the remains of the Constantinian church building. Outside the church there is a small forecourt at the right side is the entrance to the catacombs.

In the vicinity of San Sebastiano are also the Callisto and Domitilla catacombs, and the church of Santa Maria in Palmis (better known as Domine quo vadis ).

San Sebastiano Catacombs of all was in 1962 by Pope John XXIII. elevated to titular church.
