Sanahin

Sanahin ( Սանահին Armenian ) is a village in the north of the province of Lori in Armenia and now part of the city of Alaverdi. The cable car that connects Sanahin with the center of Alaverdi is said to be the steepest in the territory of the former USSR. Sanahin located on a plateau in sight of Haghpat from which it is separated by a deep ravine, which has dug a small tributary of the Debed.

Monastery

The village is known for its monastery complex founded in the 10th century and listed along with the monasteries in Haghpat as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The complex belongs to the Armenian Apostolic Church and has numerous khachkar, stones with elaborate engravings representing a cross and several tombs of bishops.

Name

The name ' Sanahin ' means in Armenian literally means " This is older than any ", and documented the claim, the monastery is older than the one in Haghpat. The two villages and their monasteries are similar in many kinds

Tourism

Just as Haghpat Sanahin is visited by an increasing number of tourists and is included in numerous Armenian travel agencies program.

Sons and daughters

Sanahin is the birthplace of two famous brothers Mikoyan:

  • Artyom Ivanovich Mikoyan was a noted aircraft designer and one of the fathers of the MiG.
  • Anastas Mikoyan was the politician Hovhannessi with the longest career in the Politburo of the CPSU.

Relatives of the brothers have worked in the vicinity of the monastery is a small museum in a former school.
