Sânandrei

Sanandrei ( German Sankt Andreas, Hungarian Szentandrás ) is a municipality in Timiş, Banat, Romania.

Location

Sanandrei is located 12 km north of Timisoara, has the regional road DJ692 connection to 4 km south national road DN69 and lies on the railway line Timisoara - Arad.

History

Sanandrei is one of the oldest towns of the district Timiş. The town was first mentioned in 1230 under the name Sancto Andrea, but archaeological findings testify to the existence of a settlement as early as the Neolithic period. 1748 the first Germans were settled here, built in 1762, the Roman Catholic Church, which after some modifications received its present form in 1811. 1766 Frenchmen were settled in Sanandrei and 1772 another 42 German families. 1834 Greek Orthodox church was built.

On 4 June 1920, the Banat was divided into three parts as a result of the Treaty of Trianon. The largest, eastern part, which also includes Saint Andrew was, fell to Romania. In 1923 the town was the official name Sanandrei.

As a result of the Waffen-SS Agreement of May 12, 1943 between the Antonescu government and Hitler's Germany all ethnic German conscript men were drafted into the German army. Even before the war, in January 1945, the deportation of all ethnic German women took place between 18 and 30 years and men aged 16-45 years to build labor in the Soviet Union instead. The land reform law of 23 March 1945 which provided for the expropriation of German farmers in Romania, the rural population escaped the livelihoods.

In the center of the church are the city hall, the school, the rectory, the Kindergarten, doctor's office, pharmacy, police station and post office. In addition, there are several local restaurants, shops and various craft shops.
