Sandino is a city and a municipality in the province of Pinar del Rio in Cuba. It is located in the extreme southwest of both the province and throughout Cuba and covers 1709 km ² in area. If we add the adjacent Cayos, one arrives at a total area of ​​1715.28 km ². To the north it borders the Municipalities Guane and Mantua and the Gulf of Mexico to the west lies the Yucatánstraße and to the south the Caribbean Sea. 68.7 % of the area of the territory of the Municipalities include the Guanahacabibes Peninsula, which is one of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1987.

In the municipality, which existed in its present expansion since the local government reform of 1976, now live 37 293 inhabitants, which corresponds to a population density of 21.8 inhabitants per square kilometer.

In Sandino is a branch of the Latin American School of Medicine, a university study and research, with students from all parts of Latin America.
