Sandton

Province

Sandton is a town in the north of the metropolitan municipality of the City of Johannesburg, in the South African province of Gauteng. 2011 Sandton had 222 415 inhabitants. The name originated from a combination of the names of the two parts Sandown and Bryanston, which in turn are named after places in the United Kingdom.

History

The city was founded in the year 1969, when Johannesburg enlarged to the north. After the end of apartheid and the establishment of the new democratic government in 1994 Sandton was incorporated into the metropolitan municipality of Johannesburg. At Sandton next to Sandown and Bryanston belongs to the district of Rivonia.

Economy

Sandton, the new financial center of the country and Johannesburg's most important business center. The Johannesburg Securities Exchange ( JSE ), the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, located since the late 1990s in Sandton. Similarly, the Industrial Development Corporation, Eskom, African Rainbow Minerals, Shanduka Group, Palabora Mining Corporation and CNBC Africa have their headquarters in this place.

Attractions

One of the biggest attractions of the city is Sandton City, the largest shopping center in South Africa. Together with Nelson Mandela Square, the central square, the complex covers an area of about 144,000 square meters. In Sandton Gautrain there is a breakpoint.

Sandton is the most prosperous district in City of Johannesburg, not far away from Alexandra, probably the poorest township in the country.
