Sangaste Parish

Sangaste ( German: Sagnitz = castle / manor; Theal = former parish ) is a rural municipality in the Estonian Valga County with an area of ​​144.7 km ². It has 1489 inhabitants (1 January 2006).

In addition to the main town Sangaste The parish includes the villages Ädu, Keeni, Kurevere, Lauküla, Lossiküla, Mäeküla, Mägiste, Pringi, Restu, Risttee, Sarapuu, Tiidu and Vaalu.

Sangaste was first mentioned in 1272 under the name Toyvel. The mansion Sagnitz founded in 1287 gave the church its present name. Castle Sagnitz ( Sangaste today ) was built in 1881 by the architect Otto Pius Hippius ( now a hotel and restaurant).
