Sankt Georgen in the Lavant Valley ( officially St. Georgen in the Lavant Valley ) is a municipality with 2021 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) in the district of Wolfsberg in Carinthia, Austria.

Geography

Geographical location

The municipality is located in the Lower Lavant Valley and extends from Lavantfluss on the slopes of the Kor. The main town of St. Georgen located 17 kilometers south of the district capital of Wolfsberg.

History

The ancient quarry of the spy furnace marble at the top Steinberg points to Roman colonization, he was part of a Roman estate at today's Town Allersdorf.

The stone castle east of the present St. Georgen, first mentioned in 1214, was probably built by Salzburg followers and formed the administrative center of today's municipal area. Population

According to Census 2001, Sankt Georgen 2,187 inhabitants, of which 98.4 % are Austrian citizens. 96.9 % of the population are Roman Catholic and 0.9 % for the Protestant Church, 1.3 % have no religious confession.

Coat of arms
