Frantschach -St. Gertraud is a market town with 2711 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) in the district of Wolfsberg in Carinthia.

Geography

Geographical location

Located north of Wolf Mountain, the area extends from the Lavant on the slopes of the Kor. The 16 villages in the municipality are located at altitudes in 504-1600 m. In the East, the community is bordered by the Styrian district Germany mountain.

The community Frantschach -St. Gertraud is in the cadastral Kamper Kogel, run and Prössinggraben, Obergösel, Limberg, Untergösel, Kamp, Hintergumitsch, Zellach, Vorderwölch and Hinterwölch divided. The municipality includes the following 15 places (in brackets population as of 31 October 2011):

History

The Upper Lavant Valley was from the 11th century in the territory of the Bishopric of Bamberg, the current municipal area belonged partly to the City Court Wolfsberg, in part, to the district court Hartneidstein. The Church in St. Gertraud was first documented in 1289.

From the late Middle Ages the mining and processing of iron was formative; Frantschach consisted in a hammer mill, in St. Gertraud features a hammer and a blast furnace and in Wölch ore was mined. 1759 establishments by Hochstift Bamberg came first to the Austrian government, in 1825, they were of the Wolf Berger ironworks company in 1846 and eventually purchased by the Silesian entrepreneurs Hugo Henckel von Donnersmarck. He left 1847/48 to build a modern blast furnace in St. Gertraud, but also walked the face of the looming crisis of 1882, the Mont estate Frantsch Acher plant in a pulp mill to. From the present company Mondi Packaging Frantschach arose.

In the formation of local churches in 1850, initially constituted the three communities Gösel, Kamp and Wölch that are 1954-1963 for the first time to the community Frantschach -St. Gertraud merged. The local government reform in 1973 the community was incorporated but already in the greater community of Wolfsberg. After a referendum in 1991, it was on January 1, 1997 independent again, and thus is Frantschach -St. Gertraud Carinthia's youngest municipality. Wolfsberg wanted to prevent the secession Frantschachs to the last, because in Frantschach with the paper and pulp mill, a large taxpayer is resident.

Because of its economic importance to the community was granted the right to use the designation " market town " in 2001.

Population

According to the 2001 census has Frantschach - Sankt Gertraud 3,148 inhabitants, of which 92.5 % have Austrian, Bosnian, 2.7% and 1.8 % Croatian citizenship. 89.3 % of the population are Roman Catholic, 1.1% to 3.7% are Protestant Church and the Islamic faith. 4.9% is no religious persuasion.

Culture and sights

  • The parish church of St. Gertraud in the eponymous village is a late Gothic building from the first half of the 16th century. In it is located on the west wall a arisen around 1420 Gothic fresco. A predecessor was first documented in 1289, since 1539 St. Gertraud parish.
  • The parish church of St. Nicholas in Kamp is also built in its present form in the late Gothic style ( end 15./Anfang 16th century ), it has already been mentioned in a document in 1346 ( uncertain) and 1399.
  • The Frantsch Acher blast furnace is located on the north of Lavant St. Gertraud. The 1848 built, provided with Gothicising forms of jewelry tower-like construction is included as a landmark in the arms of the municipality.

Economy and infrastructure

The largest operation in the village is the paper and pulp mill Mondi Packaging Frantschach. Tourism also plays a certain role in St. Gertraud is the wine level ski resort, not far are Hebalm and Koralpe.

Through the municipal area, the packers Straße (B 70 ) and the railroad in the Lavanttalbahn leads.

Coat of arms

The blazon of the municipal coat of arms is: " Silver and Black opened three pointed arches in increased sign foot on two pale as growing, increased among the fighters services, also in green with a silver, drawn in black geböschter in the basement, somewhat constricted in the upper floor and the top of a battlement with roofed turrets essays reinforced at the corners of the tower, silver beseitet front of a leaf or the back of a spruce twig. "

In the sign of the emblem, the three Gothic yokes of the parish church of St. Gertraud are indicated as pointed arches, over the 1847/48 built blast furnace. Fallen leaf and spruce branch for which up today significant Frantsch Acher paper and pulp production.

Coat of arms and flag were presented to the community on 3 June 1999, the flag shows the colors green and white with integrated crest.
