History

Sanquhar Castle was built in the 13th century by the family Crichton. It was visited over the years by many important people, such as Robert the Bruce, William Wallace, Edward I, Mary Queen of Scots and James IV.

In the 17th century the castle to Sir William Douglas, 1st Duke of Queensberry, was sold. This has already let Drumlanrig Castle with its unique pink stand stone ten miles south of Sanquhar near Thornhill, build. From this point on Sanquhar Castle fell steadily until it was acquired in 1895 by John Crichton - Stuart, 3rd Marquess of Bute. This raved about it, the ancestral home of his ancestors to rebuild and restore, as already Cardiff Castle and Castell Coch before. His sudden death in 1900 destroyed this dream; Work on the castle were hired. What remained was a partly restored and partly in the original state located ruin, as it is preserved today.
