Sant’Isidoro a Capo le Case

St. Isidore a Capo le Case is a church and monastery buildings in Rome. The Franciscan Monastery is located in the Ludovisi district on the Pincio; the church is the Irish National Church in Rome. From 1810 to 1820, the convent building -based artist colony of the Nazarene.

History

The church and monastery were donated by Ottaviano Vestri di Barbiano. The occasion was the canonization of five saints by Gregory XV. in 1622, among them Isidore of Madrid. In the new, unfinished convent attracted Spanish Franciscan from the Discalced branch of the order. After only two years of complex of Franciscans from Ireland came under the leadership of Luke Wadding, who had fled to Rome. Wadding set up a study house, which was recognized in 1625 by a bull of Pope Urban VIII. In addition to St. Isidore St. Patrick was now the co-patron of the monastery and church.

The Irish Convention was dissolved briefly by Napoleon. In the empty building in 1810 attracted the German artists of the Lukasbund under the leadership of Friedrich Overbeck and established a living and working community, which continued here until about 1820. During this period established for the group the name Nazarene. The name of the road leading along the Via degli Artisti Convention remembers to this day use by the artists' colony.

The Irish Franciscans regained the facility; until the end of the 20th century they were talking here a college (St. Isidore 's College ), all of the Irish Franciscan Province of the Order ( this included Australia) visited. In 2008, the plant was handed over to the General Master of the Franciscan Order, who with a significant library transferred the Convention and the activities of St. Bonaventure in Grottaferrata here. However, an Irish Franciscan presence should be preserved wherever possible. Today the city has 13 Franciscan from six countries.

Church

The monastery church was started initially on a design by Antonio Casoni Felice and then completed under Domenico Castelli (facade with portico and doppelrampiger stairs) and Carlo Bizzaccheri ( 1704-1705 ). The interior has a single nave in the shape of a Latin cross and has a barrel vault. There are two side chapels in the nave and the choir. The ceiling frescoes are by Carlo Maratta ( History of Joseph, Immaculate Conception), the painting in the dome is by Domenico Bartolini. The high altar is a painting of St. Isidore and the Virgin Mary by Andrea Sacchi. The Cappella Da Sylva was rebuilt to a design by Gian Lorenzo Bernini and contains designed by his son Paolo Valentino Bernini grave monuments.

Convent building

The convent building is built around two cloisters, the small cloister ( il piccolo chiostro ), which was designed in 1626 by Casoni, and named after Luke Waddington Wading cloister with frescoes of the 17th century.
