Sant Pere del Burgal

Sant Pere del Burgal is a former Benedictine monastery dating from the 9th century. It is located near the village Escaló belongs to the municipality Guingueta d' Àneu in the Pallars Sobirà in the province of Lleida Spanish Catalonia Autonomous Region. Of the monastic buildings except for a few remnants of walls is only the church received. The original wall paintings of the apse are now replaced by copies. They were removed in 1932 and stored since then at the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya in Barcelona. In 2012, the Church of the monument ( Bien de Interès Cultural ) was told.

History

The first mention of the monastery can be found in a document of Count Raymond I of Toulouse from the year 859 soon Sant Pere del Burgal which twelve kilometers south of Sort nearby Monastery of Santa Maria de Gerri was assumed. In the middle of the 10th century abbess Ermengarda is mentioned as Sant Pere del Burgal had been converted for a short time in a convent. In the 11th century, the monastery fell into the dependence of the 30 kilometers southeast of Carcassonne nearby abbey of Sainte -Marie de Lagrasse, whose priory it was. 1570 had fallen the monastery and it was canceled. 1770 came Sant Pere del Burgal again to the monastery of Gerri, 1835 was the final resolution.

Church

The church is designed as a three-aisled basilica. She had a double chancel, as was common in Carolingian architecture. Examples of churches East and West Choir in Spain are the churches of San Cebrián de Mazote and Santiago de Peñalba. The west choir was two stories at the bottom of an altar was erected. Today, the three-piece east choir is still preserved. This was converted into a chapel and is the only covered part of the building. About the arches of the nave, the openings on the walls still visible, where the wooden ceiling was anchored.

Wall painting

The wall and ceiling paintings in the apse are dated to the 11th and 12th centuries and attributed to the Master of Pedret. They apply in addition to the murals of Sant Quirze de Pedret, Santa Maria d' Àneu and Sant Pere d' Àger as the most important from this workshop.

The center of the Apsiskalotte takes a Majestas Domini - representation, which is, however, severely damaged. Only the feet of Jesus and the lower part of the mandorla are visible. Links of the prophet Isaiah and the Archangel Gabriel are shown on the right of the Prophet Ezekiel and the Archangel Michael. On the level below Maria is surrounded by five provided with Halo people. The Apostle Peter can be recognized by his keys, the Apostle Paul to his bald head. John the Baptist holding a bowl with the Lamb of God. The female figure on the right below is a countess, however, can not be clearly identified.
