Special

The island is home to the famous Colombian musician and singer Totó la Momposina and its musicians (many family members). Their music is a fusion of African and Spanish influences, and the harmonies of the native inhabitants of the region. These indigenous elements are particularly evident in the polyphonic melodies played by the Gaitas ( flutes). The texts often refer to life on the Magdalena, which has played an important role as a transport route in the history of Colombia. African slaves were transported here, and also the cumbia has found on this power to spread. Based on the instruments used, the variety of ethnic influences is clear: bombo, tambor macho ( Llamador ), tambor hembra ( repicador ) or tambor mayor, guache, marimbula, Camillo flute. The song is often found, the call - and-response scheme. So there is a choir that is in dialogue with an individual. By combining the melodies of Gaitas and the rhythms of different drums, the music is often included as a hypnotic.

History

The city Mompós was founded on May 3, 1537 by Alfonso de Heredia, on behalf of the Governor of Cartagena Juan de Santa Cruz, in the field of Malibues. The Indian chief of Malibúes Mompoj helped the conquistadors in establishing settlements. In thanks, the Spaniards named the city after the chief and the governor of Cartagena as Santa Cruz de mompox. Santa Cruz literally means " Holy Cross ", which is still reflected in the city flag.

Mompós was an important city in the Viceroyalty of New Granada. When the German explorer Alexander von Humboldt in 1801 undertook his trip to South America, he rested from April 25 to May 5 in Mompós.

On August 6, 1810 Mompós declared himself as one of the first cities of New Granada as vollatändig independent of Spain.
